Yellowhammer – Lazy

[blipfm http://]

Yellowhammer track “Lazy” in Oceans 12 and on the Soundtrack CD. Yellowhammer springs from the mind of one man. After 40 minutes spent inside the world he inhabits you might be glad that he lives there sending his bizarre, beautiful and, frankly, unhinged messages to the outside world – so we dont have to. Like Lone Pigeon crossed with Lieutenant Pigeon, Hugo Nicolson goes to far-flung musical locations you didnt even know existed let alone could get to – and shows them to be the strange and exotic destinations of a bewitched imagination. In this Hugo has something of an advantage (carved out from a colossal disadvantage) in that the 12 songs comprising Yellowhammer are broadly-speaking the tale of his own very real emotional and mental collapse and subsequent faltering recovery, and therefore comes from a very strange place indeed. After having co-produced Primal Screams Screamadelica, Hugo took that bands hedonistic ethos maybe a little too much to heart, leaving little bits of himself strewn along the roadsides of their tour route, as well as all around Barnes, where he then lived. It is this experience that provides the source material for Yellowhammer, and from it Hugo has made a record that is equal parts enthralling confessional and crazy, skewed pop music of the kind that disappeared, along with the acid casualties who generally created it, somewhere in the mid-Seventies.
